The **Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist 36MH** is a large and robust survival knife, forged from one solid block of 52100 steel. This is a type of tool steel that was originally used for ball bearings. Soon it was concluded that it also has excellent properties to be used in knives. It is tough, easy to sharpen and retains its sharpness well.

 However, 52100 steel is not stainless. That is why Cold Steel has enhanced the Drop Forged Survivalist with a matt grey powder coating. This also looks really cool. Whether you're going to hunt big game, or want to spend a weekend in the woods: the Survivalist will probably last longer than you do.

 The Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist comes with a good Secure-Ex sheath that can easily be used by left and right-handed users.

Très beau couteau, une belle pièce de métal, bonne étui...

Un article de qualité, avec un prix très accessible, et surtout un très grand choix que je ne retrouve nul part ailleurs.

Hier bekommt man für wenig Geld ein wirklich tolles Messer. Liegt toll in der Hand, ist sehr scharf out of the box und hat sich im Alltag bewährt. Groß genug als 1-Tool-Option. Ein wahnsinns Outdoormesser.

Aus einem einzelnen Stück Stahl hergestellt, mit zwei angeschraubten Griffschalen. Der Griff ist recht schmal, liegt aber trotzdem anständig in der Hand. Die Griffschalen sind sehr rauh, was auch nötig ist, da das beschichtete Metall hingegen recht glatt ist und wenig Struktur aufweist. Durch das zuverlässige Massen-Herstellungsverfahren würde ich sehr wenig Probleme in "Fit & Finish" erwarten - meins ist auch bis auf minimal ungleichmäßigen Anschliff nahezu perfekt gefertigt.

Die Klinge hat einen sehr schönen Flachschliff, der auch relativ dünn zusammen läuft. Ich würde dieses Messer mit Originalanschliff nur bedingt zum Hacken nehmen, auch wenn der verwendete Stahl ziemlich zäh scheint. Nachdem ich die Schultern des Anschliffs vollständig runter geschliffen und den Anschliff von Hand überarbeitet habe schneidet es besser als so manches Küchenmesser. Ich erwarte bei der Benutzung aber durchaus, dass kleinere Ausbrüche vorkommen könnten - bisher nach einem kleinen Testfeuer (Anzündholz batonen, Feathersticks, Kleinkram halt - gehackt habe ich nur testweise durch einen ca. 3cm dicken Stecken trockenes Weichholz, also nichts Problematisches) noch nichts vorgekommen. Für mich ist die dünn ausgeschliffene Klinge durchaus etwas Positives, da ich recht selten ausgiebig und ungehemmt Holz hacke und mir Schnittfreudigkeit deutlich wichtiger ist, aber bei so einem langen Messer erwartet manch Einer vielleicht doch, dass man damit kleinere Bäumchen fällen könnte. Geht sicherlich auch, aber es gibt dafür halt noch bessere Kandidaten mit stabilerer Schneidkante.

Die Scheide ist meines Erachtens wirklich gut. Rastet an den Parierelementen richtig schön satt ein und ist ohne den Gürtelträger (dafür ist mir das gute Stück eh zu groß) gut nutzbar. Spiel hat das Messer in der Scheide kaum.

Einziger Wehmutstropfen: Die wirklich billig anmutende Beschichtung. Sieht aus wie eine Sprühlackierung (vlt. auch getunkt?) und trägt relativ stark auf. Nachdem ich die Beschichtung im Klingenbereich entfernt hatte war schon vor Veränderung des Anschliffs eine spürbare Verbesserung im Schneidverhalten spürbar. Hinzu kommt, dass die Farbe wohl Geschmackssache ist - grau-schwarz hätte ich deutlich eher noch ertragen können. Aber gut, jetzt ist die Beschichtung halt abgeschliffen und die Klinge kriegt mit der Zeit eine schöne Patina - auch gut.

Preislich gibt's wirklich viel Messer für's Geld. Auf dem europäischen Markt ganz vorne... ich musste nur innerlich ein bisschen weinen als ich gesehen habe, dass das Messer in Amiland gerade mal $69 kostet. Aber auch zu 109€ würde ich's wieder kaufen.
