Whether you’re splitting wood or working in the forest: good tools make all the difference.

More than a century and a half of craftsmanship

Helko Werk is a German brand that has been producing axes and striking tools in the Wuppertal region since 1844. This area, rich in iron ore, forests, and fast-flowing rivers, has formed the foundation of a strong forging tradition for centuries. That heritage is reflected in advanced forging and hardening techniques focused on durability and performance.

The axe heads are forged from carbon steel, a material known for its hardness and wear resistance. This ensures the edge stays sharp longer and requires less maintenance. After forging, the axes are finished by hand to ensure consistent shape and controlled quality.

The range includes hand axes, splitting axes, forestry axes, and models for bushcraft and outdoor use. The differences lie in weight, head shape, and cutting angle. A splitting axe has a wide head designed to split wood fibers. A forestry axe is ground thinner, allowing it to cut deeper into wood with minimal resistance. This makes it suitable for felling: the controlled cutting down of a tree with precise strikes at the base.

The handles are made from hickory wood, a strong and shock-resistant material. It absorbs vibrations, providing more comfort and reducing strain on hands and arms.

Built for control and power

Helko Werk axes are designed with a focus on balance and ergonomics. The ratio between head weight and handle length determines how efficiently force is transferred. Good balance means more power with less effort.

Hickory handles contribute to control thanks to their slight flexibility and shock absorption. This makes prolonged use more comfortable and reduces the risk of injury.

The edge is tailored to the intended use. Splitting axes have a thicker edge for splitting wood, while axes for precision work are thinner and sharper for controlled cuts. This ensures each axe performs optimally for its purpose.

Many models are specifically designed for tasks such as splitting, felling, or fine cutting work. Shape, weight, and edge geometry are optimized accordingly, improving both power and accuracy.

Durability plays a central role. Thanks to strong materials, solid construction, and maintenance options, these axes are built to last.

From traditional to modern

The range consists of several series. The Classic line is based on traditional designs and craftsmanship. The Vario series offers flexibility with interchangeable handles, allowing you to replace only parts when worn and extend the lifespan.

In addition, there are models for a wide range of applications: from compact axes for on the go to heavy-duty versions for firewood. There are also specialized options for forestry and outdoor use.

This means there is a suitable Helko Werk axe for virtually every application.

With Helko Werk we add a brand to our assortment that stands out for proven production methods, thoughtful material choices, and a clear focus on functionality and durability.
