The Buck TOPS Nighthawk is the result of a collaboration between Buck and TOPS knives. The result is a solid fixed knife, designed for survival and/or hunting purposes. For those who find the Nighthawk just a tad too big, there is a smaller version: 'Short Nighthawk'.  
  


The blade is full tang and made of 420HC steel with Black Oxide coating. 'Full tang' means that the blade runs fully through the handle.  
  


The Nighthawk is comfortable to hold, this is dut to the ergonomically shaped handle, which is made of fiberglass-reinforced nylon. The Dynaflex anti-slip inserts provide extra grip and comfort.

Service van KT staat buiten kijf, is uitstekend!

Het mes daarentegen... Direct uit de doos valt op dat het lemmet zwart afgeeft (geolied). Na twee keer reinigen en opnieuw olien geeft het nog steeds zwart af. Jammer. 
Scherpte uit de doos is in orde.  Handvat heeft een comfortabele grip, is lekker groot. Heeft een goede duimsteun. Kunststof loopt wel helemaal om het achtereind door, géén oog voor een lanyard. Kunt achterkant ook niet gebruiken als slagijzer.
Balans is niet prettig afgesteld, ligt wat naar voren. Er is een plek voor de wijsvinger maar het mes heeft de neiging naar voren te duiken.
Het design van het blad is uitstekend! Hol geslepen is ok. Voor zwaar werk (houtsnijden) zeer geschikt. De kracht van dit mes is voor mij ook de zwakte. Het lemmet is erg dik, 6 mm, als je dan bijvoorbeeld een appel wilt doorsnijden breekt hij hem open, splijt als het ware de appel en snijdt niet meer. Bij de halve appel is dan ongeveer één centimeter gesneden vlak te zien (mèt het zwart dat het lemmet afgeeft) en de rest laat een breukvlak zien.
Teleurstellend is de afwerking van de schede. Het mes rammelt in het kunststof, het "klikt" niet vast. De drukknop voor het handvat is niet met één hand vast te zetten, al helemaal niet aan de heup!

Concluderend: de Buck Night Hawk is een tactisch mes met beperkte toepassingsmogelijkheden. Het design is meer gericht op steken dan op snijden. Als gevechtsmes uitstekend, wellicht dat je hem kunt gebruiken om in een survivalsituatie een shelter op te zetten. Maar voor het "gewone" kamperen minder geschikt. In ieder geval adviseer ik er een andere schede bij te zoeken of te (laten) maken.

Ter vergelijking: de Zero Tolerance 0100 die ik ook bij Knives and Tools heb gekocht doet het op bovenstaande punten véél beter en gaat al jaren mee op reis. Terwijl het ook als militair mes was ontworpen... (Dus het kàn wel!)

Dat prijs/kwaliteitverhouding hoger scoort heeft te maken met de lage(re) prijs...
