The **Marttiini Sharpening Stone** is a traditional, natural sharpening stone with a leather sheath. The minerals that make up the grindstone are quartz, feldspar and micas. The stone has a grain size of 1000 grit. However, not all sharpening stones are identical. Even though stones can have the same grain size, there can still be a difference in stones between brands. There are soft stones that sharpen your knives more quickly, or hard stones that will take you a bit longer to sharpen your knife, but which have a longer lifespan.

Grain size 1000 is generally a grit size that you can use to maintain the sharpness of a hunting knife, for example. If you're looking to sharpen a really blunt knife, you should start with a coarser grain first. You get the best results by using a sharpening oil, SVSA01. As you sharpen your knife you will see a slurry emerge. The particles in the slush become smaller as you sharpen, allowing you to get increasingly sharper results with the same stone. That's a cool advantage of using a natural stone!

## Rounded edges

The sides of the stone are rounded, allowing you to sharpen knives with curved blades, like spoon knives or knives with a recurve. The angled sides can be used to sharpen serrated knives as well. The stone even has a groove along the edge of its surface so that fish hooks can also be sharpened.
