The Viper Dan 2 is a stylish friction folder with nice deep-carry pocket clip. A friction folder is a folding knife with no real locking mechanism. However, you can feel some resistance on the blade which keeps it from closing. The front flipper opens the knife easily. In opened position the flipper is located on the back of the blade where your thumb would be. Pushing down your thumb keeps the blade opened during use. Friction folders are popular in the United Kingdom and Germany because they can be carried around legally. In addition, it is of course also a beautiful mechanism which many people view as a great asset.


The handle is made out of stylish red micarta and the blade from Böhler N690 steel. The back of the blade is very nicely rounded which is typical for Italian pocket knives. The deep-carry pocket clip allows you to carry the knife discretely. Only the clip will be visible and not the whole handle.


The Viper Dan is available in two different blade shapes: the Dan 1 has a drop-point blade and the Dan 2 a sheepsfoot blade, also known as Wharncliffe.

Die Griffschalen sind äußerst schlecht angepasst und stehen unterschiedlich ab.

Prachtig vormgegeven EDC mes. Het wharcliffe lemmet is practisch in gebruik en ziet er ook nog eens schitterend uit. De deep-carry pocketclip zorgt ervoor dat het mes geheel verdwijnt in je zak en geeft geen hot-spots. Als je aan het mechanisme gewend bent opent en sluit het mes zeer soepeltjes. Het mes ligt goed in de hand. De micarta greep verkleurt hoe meer je het gebruikt en krijgt zo een persoonlijke touch.  Zeker een aanrader.

De Dan 2 van Viper is echt een elegant herenmesje en tegelijkertijd een enorm praktisch EDC mes.

De micarta handgreep verkleurt na een tijdje van licht paars tot een elegante diepe bordeaux kleur. Heel mooi! Geeft ook wat grip, maar niet te veel.

Het N690 staal is echt geweldig, vergelijk het met VG10, alleen moet je het minder stroppen (minder edge-rol).

Het heeft geen 'lock', maar de 'action-stopper' laat dit "slipjoint" mes erg solide aanvoelen (vrij vergelijkbaar met de kracht van de slipjoint op de Alox Pioneer) + je kan je duim op de 'spine/flipper' leggen, waardoor je het zo goed als manueel vast zet. 

Het openen moet wel wat wennen, maar eens je ermee weg bent, stop je niet meer met spelen (u know what i mean!). 

Het openingsmechanisme doet wat denken aan een frontflipper (vergelijkbaar met een böker exskelibur maar dan met een 'detent' op 90° door de 'action-stopper').


Enige minpuntje was dat de pivot/washers wat schuurde in het begin (en een krakend geluid maakte), maar met drupje "Eden knife oil" was dit meteen verholpen en klikt het mes vlotjes  naar 90°, dan 180° en helemaal terug.

Ik kocht dit mes omdat een "locking blade" wat intimiderend kan zijn. Ik werk in een kantooromgeving en daar werken nogal wat "no-knife-lovers". Deep carry pocket clip helpt daar enigszins ook bij.

Ook is dit mes wat eleganter en minder afschrikwekkend dan sommige andere (Amerikaans geïnspireerde) messen.

Als we dan toch over onze over onze Amerikaanse vrienden praten: zij vinden "made in the USA" altijd een pluspunt. Dit mes is "made in the EU"!, als zij zich chauvinistisch mogen opstellen, wij ook.
