## Chris Reeve fixed knives: how it started 

Chris Reeve gained much renown in 1982 for the integral handle construction of his survival knives. These knives consist of a single piece of steel with a hollowed-out handle that can be unscrewed. Chris Reeve came up with this idea when working for the military. He needed a sturdier knife that could better withstand bad weather conditions. These integral survival knives were the first of their kind. Chris Reeve received several awards in the years that followed for his fixed-blade knives. Take the Chris Reeve Green Beret, for example. The Green Beret won the 'Collaboration Knife of the Year' at Blade Show 2003 It's a tactical robust fixed knife made for the U.S. Army Special Forces. In 2007, the Chris Reeve Pacific Knife won the 'American Made Knife of the Year'. This knife, too, was designed for the US military.

This is because the textile fibres expand a bit when wet, giving you more grip. ## New Spartan Blades knives for 2020


In 2020 there are immediately three new releases in the Silver Class - Professional Grade. The knives released are called the [Spartan Alala](kato://product/USSBSL004BKBK), [Spartan Damysus](kato://product/USSBSL003BKBK) and [Spartan Machai](kato://product/USSBSL002BKBK). Three decent fixed knives made from 1095 Cro Van carbon steel and a handle made from canvas micarta. You can clearly see that Spartan Blades designer Curtis Iovito left his mark on these knives. KA-BAR can be recognized by  the type of steel used and the finish. The sheaths are made from plastic instead of kydex, but still have the appreciated Spartan carrying options. With prices between 169 and 219 euros these knives are not that cheap, but also not as expensive as the knives from the Gold Class.

The 12.2-cm long drop-point blade features a classic scandi edge, ensuring the perfect balance between sharpness and durability. ## Prototyping and milling bits


Were you able to produce a working fixture? If so it is time to start producing and testing prototypes with different tools. Used a milling bit too long? You will see it when you look at the finish of the tool. A part of the finish is therefore determined by how often the bits are replaced. A bit can be cheap, but also pretty expensive. Usually a bit is used for milling away material and another for the finish. Often another very fine bit carefully moves over the surface for that nice finish. Might take a lot of time, but it is definitely worth it.


## Finish after milling


In the end you are left with all the parts that were cut out with a CNC-machine. Done? No. They now namely have a surface finish directly from the milling machine. As such you cannot avoid the fact that every part needs to be finished by hand. Sanding, sandblasting, satinizing: whatever the knife needs.


## Cost of a CNC-machine


The CNC-machine itself also doesn't come for free. Modern CNC-machines that are used today can easily take you back 100.000 euros. Sometimes even more, depending on what the machine can do. That amount will be the basis. This does not include the additional costs of the accessories and spare parts. Cost of items such as cutters and coolant. Maintenance. Costs of a CNC-operator that will control the machine, and its (additional) training.


## Conclusion


So is it really that terrible working with a CNC-machine? Absolutely not. It is the only consistent way of shaping so many parts in 3D. And compared to cutting it out by hand with a saw, sharpening and milling parts it is, in most cases, even cheaper.


You do, however, need to know that it is definitely not cheap. And that it does require a great deal of craftsmanship. From drawing to fixture design and from prototyping to the actual production. It is not that simple.

We are talking about thousands of hours spend on one fixed knife with a sheath. In this video he clearly explains how CNC-milling works for him and you can see his machine in action.

We do have to say that he uses a relatively old model from the mid-nineties. Today CNC-machines are little more advanced, faster, and can handle a lot more. The basic principles, however, remain the same and you still need to know what you are doing.


## Which brands are good at CNC-milling?


There are a couple of brands that are exceptional when it comes to milling work. True masters. Sometimes even award-winning. Examples are: [WE Knife](kato://content/migrated_pageid_495), [LionSteel](kato://content/migrated_pageid_443), [Rick Hinderer Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_464) and [Zero Tolerance](kato://content/migrated_pageid_508).

Each fixed knife needs a sheath. After all simply closing your knife and putting a sharp blade in your pocket is something we don’t recommend. So a sheath. But what should it be made of?  There are a lot of options so we will give you a couple of them.

Fixed knives often come with a leather sheath. But how do you make sure that the leather stays in great shape? How do you make sure it won’t dry out and tear?

## Better safe than sorry

Step one in taking care of your leather sheaths is making sure the leather does not wear out excessively. So better be safe than sorry, as we say. It is, for instance, not a good idea to scrape a leather sheath alongside a concrete or stone wall. After all, it will quickly wear out the leather. Also something you shouldn’t do: leaving your leather sheath out in the sun for a long period of time. The sun will ‘bake’ the leather dry, and the result is that you have to say goodbye to the suppleness of the leather. Conversely the same applies: long-term exposure to water is also not recommended. So if you start with preventing any damages you won’t have as much to fix in the long run.

## How does the leather sheath remain supple?

With the [Dovo leather balm](kato://product/DO515171) you will keep your leather sheath nice and supple. You apply it with a clean cloth and let it set for fifteen minutes. Afterwards you get another clean cloth to rub the leather. This removes the excess cream and will make the leather nice and shiny.

You can do the same with [Ballistol](kato://content/migrated_pageid_256). This is a maintenance oil that will nicely be absorbed by the leather. It will make the leather nice and supple and prevents tears.

Practical about Ballistol is that you can also rub it on the blade to prevent rust. In addition, Ballistol will help you remove any remaining tape from, for instance, steel. Although Ballistol doesn’t mention it on the package we know that Ballistol is food safe. This means that you can even use it on your kitchen knives.

Alright, so you own a knife with a Kydex sheath or plastic sheath. The kind with all those attachment eyelets. Maybe the knife already comes with a belt clip or belt loop mounted on the sheath. Maybe you just want something different? That's why we listed a few options. Keep reading to find out what to look out for when attaching a clip.

Tek-Lok clips feature a locking mechanism that prevents the sheath from being accidentally released, even during heavy use. Usually, these holes are 12.7 mm apart (half an inch). ## The different versions of the F1 and S1


In addition to the differences between specifically the F1 and S1 there are many different versions of both knives. There is, for instance, the Pro collection, the X collection and even the 'regular' F1 has numerous different options in terms of sheaths and types of steel. Both collections are produced in Japan. The finish is excellent.
