## SHIPPING AND SHIPPING COSTS

We keep stock at KATO Group's local warehouse at Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. Every product has a stock label indicating if a product is in stock and ready for shipment or not. Orders will be shipped with DHL (who hands our parcels over to local mail carriers), and normally take 3-4 days to arrive.

### Damaged or defective items

If you receive a damaged or defective item, we will promptly send you a replacement or issue you a full refund after you have returned the damaged or defective product. You will not be charged any additional shipping or handling fees for replacement shipments.

When returning one or more items, please ensure that everything is properly packed to avoid transport damage. It is preferable to return your item in the box it came in. Please include all accessories and included parts in their original packages.

* The return package goes to the collecting point in Germany. From there it is forwarded to our warehouse in the Netherlands. As soon as the package is received there, we will send a confirmation. Processing and handling can take up to 8 working days.
* If the return meets the conditions you will receive the purchase amount within four working days. We will always refund the money via the payment method used when you paid for your order.

# What about the warranty?

Almost all products we sell are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. However, how that warranty works and what the terms and conditions are can differ per brand or product. For that reason we love to tell you more about what we mean when we say warranty and what common exceptions and point of attention are. It may be a confusing amount of exceptions and differences so buckle up: here we go.

## What does your warranty apply to?

In nine out of ten cases you will receive a warranty on **material and manufacturing flaws** when you purchase a product. This means that if there is a defect in the product caused by a flaw in the material, or the manufacturing you are entitled to a warranty.

This also means that wear and tear never entitles you to a warranty. After a while each product will wear out, to a greater or lesser extent. This, however, doesn’t mean that the product or the manufacturer is to blame. Some products wear out faster because they are perhaps of lesser quality. As long as this is inherent to the product, and not an exceptional material or manufacturing flaw you won’t be able to invoke the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

## So what does warranty mean?

What a brand feels should be a part of a warranty differs as well. For instance, if a product breaks within the warranty period you are legally entitled to a repair or replacement. This means that a knife can sometimes be fixed and enhanced with a new blade or any other replacement part. Sometimes it means you will receive a completely new product. If the product is no longer produced the product can be replaced by a product of equal value. This is taken care of by the supplier or manufacturer.

Some manufacturers choose to replace the product with a refurbished product. This is a fixed and checked version of the product. As long as this product is of equal value as the product you sent in, the manufacturer may decide to do so.

## What about the warranty period?

Many products list a warranty period. Often a minimum of two years after purchase, up to life. Within that period you can claim the warranty offered.

It is important to know that for some products the conditions of the warranty differ from other products produced by the same manufacturer. Think of a bottle of oil or a tube of diamond paste for a strop. Fortunately these are also products for which the warranty is (almost) never claimed.

Some manufacturers can also decide to, for instance, offer a standard two-year warranty which they will extend to five years if you register online or send a postcard.

## What does life-long warranty mean?

What life-long warranty means differs per brand. While some brands consider life-long to be as long as the initial purchaser is still alive, some feel life-long actually applies without a limit. However, most common is that a warranty lasts as long as the expected life of the product.

There are American manufacturers who print a label saying ‘Lifetime Warranty*’ on the box. However, when you look up the star on the back of the box you will notice that life-long only means when you live in North-America, and that you ‘only’ get a 25-year warranty if you live elsewhere.

## Defects due to incorrect use

Sometimes something happens to a product because it isn’t correctly used. Defects caused by incorrect use are practically never a part of the warranty. Simply think before use if the product was intended for what you are about to do with it.

A favourite example is batoning with an outdoor knife where you cut or split a piece of wood by using a baton-sized stick to hit the spine of a knife. Yes, many knives can handle this. Some are even made for it. However, in the end it is a task which should be carried out with an axe.

We do have to state here that some brands give you a warranty on anything. No matter what you do with the product. These are, however, rare exceptions.

## Rust and warranty

Knives rust. That is a given. Even when a knife is made from ‘stainless’ steel it can still rust. It is, after all, not ‘stain free’. This is the result of external factors: moisture, acids or salt. Or a combination of the three. Think of salty sea air or fruit acids. Just clean and maintain your product well. You could, if need be, also use [Flitz](kato://product/FZ002) to remove the rust. It is never covered by the warranty.

## Modifications and disassembly

For many products the following applies: if you modify the product yourself your warranty will expire. Sharpening a knife is, of course, not included as it is necessary maintenance. But as soon as you start filing, painting, sanding, soldering, anodizing etc. your warranty will expire immediately. There are manufacturers who look at this a little more pragmatically: a small modification to the handle won’t affect the blade, which will make them lenient. But never assume they will be!

Disassembly could also lead to the warranty expiring. Think of the famous stickers on electronics: ‘Warranty void if seal broken’. It, however, really differs per brand how this is handled. First you should always check the website of the manufacturer before you bring out your toolbox.

## Transferability and warranty

Some brands are very strict in saying they will only hand out a warranty to the first owner of the product. One of the reasons being that they assume that during the first purchase a user manual was included in the box that attempted to assure good use. If it is a second-hand product this manual is not always still included.

## Batteries and warranty

When it comes to batteries things are slightly more complicated when it comes to warranties. For many lights, even those which include a battery, a five-year warranty is listed on material and manufacturing flaws. However, this applies to the light and not to the battery. Some manufacturers don’t even hand out a warranty on the battery at all, others only six months.

This is because the battery is considered to be a consumer product. Like you also need vacuum cleaner bags to keep your vacuum working, you will need a battery to make your light shine. A vacuum cleaner bag won’t last forever, even though you occasionally empty it. The same applies to a battery. On average you charge a Li-Ion battery 500 times, after which it is basically done. The way you handle a battery also determines how well it keeps working. Whether you charge it completely and completely empty it. Or if you leave it out empty too long, or consequently overcharge it in a faulty charger. Do you store it in a hot environment or a really cold one? These types of things cannot be checked in case of a warranty claim. So keep in mind that batteries are almost never covered by the warranty.

## So many different opinions, what about names?

In this article we have talked about many different views amongst different manufacturers. It would make sense to say: but what are the names of these manufacturers? We will not say. Mostly because it would mean that this page would never be up-to-date. For that reason we always recommend to always visit the website of the manufacturer in case of a defect to see what type of warranty conditions they adhere to. After all, these may be subject to change.

However, the Inkosi is a lot more innovative and has a lot of new upgrades. The main difference can be found looking at the washers. The Inkosi has oversized bronze washers.This makes the knife extra sturdy and the CPM MagnaCut blade is completely sandwiched at the hinge screw. The stop pin has also been made a lot stronger, and the pocket clip has been slightly twisted so that it no longer rests on the lockbar. 

 

Furthermore, the Inkosi is equipped with double thumb studs, so that it can be used both left-handed and right-handed people. The standoff and the lanyard pin function as one at the back of the handle. This makes the knife more beautiful and compact. An interesting detail is the ceramic detent ball in the lockbar. This is located at the tip of the lockbar and acts as both lockface and detent ball. Unlike the Sebenza 21, the titanium part of the lockbar does not touch the blade of the Inkosi. This prevents most wear and tear of the titanium. However, it does not make the Inkosi's lock-up any less strong. Unlocking has even become a lot smoother as there is a smaller contact point with the blade. 

 

The blade is 8% thicker than that of the Sebenza 25 and enhanced with a large hollow grind. Chris Reeve achieved this by using a bigger wheel to create the grind. As a result, the blade has the same strength as a full-flat grind while ensuring an extended sharpening durability. ## History of Kershaw 

Kershaw Knives was founded in 1974 in Portland, Oregon. The first knives were made in Japan. In 1997, the US factory was opened, and the knives were made in the US.

One-handed pocket knives are knives that you can fold open using just one hand. Depending on the mechanism and how new you are to the world of pocket knives, this might take some practice. ## Prototyping and milling bits


Were you able to produce a working fixture? If so it is time to start producing and testing prototypes with different tools. Used a milling bit too long? You will see it when you look at the finish of the tool. A part of the finish is therefore determined by how often the bits are replaced. A bit can be cheap, but also pretty expensive. Usually a bit is used for milling away material and another for the finish. Often another very fine bit carefully moves over the surface for that nice finish. Might take a lot of time, but it is definitely worth it.

In the end you are left with all the parts that were cut out with a CNC-machine. Done? No. They now namely have a surface finish directly from the milling machine. As such you cannot avoid the fact that every part needs to be finished by hand. Sanding, sandblasting, satinizing: whatever the knife needs.


## Cost of a CNC-machine


The CNC-machine itself also doesn't come for free. Modern CNC-machines that are used today can easily take you back 100.000 euros. Sometimes even more, depending on what the machine can do. That amount will be the basis. This does not include the additional costs of the accessories and spare parts. Cost of items such as cutters and coolant. Maintenance. Costs of a CNC-operator that will control the machine, and its (additional) training.


## Conclusion


So is it really that terrible working with a CNC-machine? Absolutely not. It is the only consistent way of shaping so many parts in 3D. And compared to cutting it out by hand with a saw, sharpening and milling parts it is, in most cases, even cheaper.


You do, however, need to know that it is definitely not cheap. And that it does require a great deal of craftsmanship. From drawing to fixture design and from prototyping to the actual production. It is not that simple.

We do have to say that he uses a relatively old model from the mid-nineties. Today CNC-machines are little more advanced, faster, and can handle a lot more. The basic principles, however, remain the same and you still need to know what you are doing.


## Which brands are good at CNC-milling?


There are a couple of brands that are exceptional when it comes to milling work. True masters. Sometimes even award-winning. Even a classic like the Buck 110 Folding Hunter is updated once in a while. Early 2019 Buck decided to replace the handle material with ebony. Even fancier!


For years the handle on the Buck 110 was made from Dymondwood. A type of composite of layers of hardwood with synthetic resin in between. Incredibly strong and stable, but not the same as wood. For that reason Buck exchanged that wood with ebony. This makes each knife even more unique. After all, wood is never the same.

In the United States you often come across warnings and disclaimers. On some packages containing knives you will, for instance, find warnings that are, to put it nicely, quite alarming. One of the most explicit warnings is the following:

> WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

And that is quite the statement, one you can find on the boxes of many large brands. [Buck Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_296), for instance, has printed this warning on its boxes and also [ESEE Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_356) has printed it on top of their packaging. Both pretty big brands. But what does it really mean? Are these knives life threatening on a chemical level?

## Steel vs. Iron

Steel is a material that mainly consists of the chemical element iron (Fe). Iron is the name of an atom, and steel that consists of 100% iron is not suitable for daily use.

Never use the term iron unless you are talking of the iron atom.

## Tooling steel

Tooling steel is steel suited for tools like knives, chisels and other tools.

The main element added to steel is carbon. The addition of 1-2% carbon makes it possible to harden steel.

If the tooling steel must be stainless steel, 8-30% chrome is added to the steel. Nickel is not used to make the tooling steel into stainless steel, as that hampers the hardening of the steel.

Besides carbon and possibly chrome, other elements are added sometimes to improve the quality of the steel on specific points. The best known elements are Vanadium and Molybdene. The influence of those elements is not described in this article as it is of a very complex matter.

## Structure

It is very important to know that the composition of a type of steel in itself does not say anything about the characteristics of the steel.

Steel consists of iron crystals, that exist in different shapes (by shapes we mean the order of the atoms) and sizes. Additions like carbon can be present in the crystals or in different shapes between the crystals. Carbon can be present as balls or discs between the crystals but can also bind to the iron atoms (carbids).

The structure of the steel therefore not only depends on the composition but also the treatments the steel underwent. Think of heat and cold treatments and welding (= shaping steel in a solid shape by remodelling).

## Hardening

When you slowly heat liquid steel (with 1-2% carbon) the atoms will order differently under different temperatures. That is because the atoms start to vibrate more strongly and need more room to move under increasing temperatures.

Above 200 °C the atoms can take on another order. It is not possible below 200 °C and the structure is frozen as it were.

Between 200 °C and 700 °C, ferrite crystals are formed (ferrite is a name for the order of the iron and carbon atoms, just like austenite and martensite).

In ferrite crystals the iron atoms are close together and there is no room for the carbon atoms between the iron atoms. That’s why the carbon attaches to the edges of the ferrite crystals.

Ferrite steel is soft and tough. It is used as construction steel, but is not suitable as tooling steel.

Above 700 °C the iron atoms arrange themselves differently. Austenite crystals are formed.

In austenite crystals there is room for carbon atoms, between the iron atoms. If you keep the steel at a temperature above 700 °C for a while, the carbon atoms move from the edges of the crystals to the space between the iron atoms in the crystals.

By quickly cooling off the steel from this phase to below 200 °C (by for example immersing in water or oil) the carbon atoms cannot leave the crystals. Because the carbon atoms are in the way, the iron atoms cannot re-arrange into ferrite crystals. Martensite crystals are formed instead.

In that format the steel is considerably harder and is called hardened steel.

The story sounds simple, but many parameters affect the result. Think of: the structure of the steel before it is hardened, the exact temperature, the duration of heating, the speed of cooling and the influence of other elements added purposely, or unintended as impurities in the steel.

## Tempering

After a piece of steel has been hardened, it is too brittle to be used and is full of inner tensions. The method to remove that brittleness and tensions is called tempering.

During tempering the steel is heated for a few hours at 200-300 °C. In that temperature the crystals re-arrange themselves which decreases the inner tensions and brittleness.

The duration is critical here because the steel will become progressively softer.

## Hardness

Hardness is the resistance of the steel to permanent distortion at microscopic level.

The hardness of the steel is measured by pressing a pointed object with a certain force against the steel and measuring the size of the imprint.

The hardness of tooling steel is expressed in degrees Rockwell C, often abbreviated as HRC.

The table below gives an overall overview of the characteristics of knives steel with different hardness levels.

* Up to 52 HRC: Too soft for making knives.
* 52-54 HRC: Quite soft steel, reasonable quality.
* 54-56 HRC: The hardness of many French chefs’ knives. The steel is hard enough for kitchen use, but regular use of a sharpening steel is required to keep the knife sharp. Knives of this hardness are usually easy to sharpen.
* 56-58 HRC: Hardness applied for professional German kitchen knives. Knives of this hardness remain sharp long enough for kitchen use, can be sharpened on a sharpening steel and are reasonably easy to sharpen.
* 58-60 HRC: Hardness you usually find in better quality pocket knives like Spyderco, Cold Steel and Buck, and kitchen knives from Japan, like Global. Those knives remain sharp considerably longer than cheaper knives, but are a lot more difficult to sharpen.
* 60-62 HRC: Knives of this hardness remain sharp for a long time, but they are at risk of becoming brittle and the knives are often difficult to sharpen. These disadvantages are quite easy to suppress with modern steel types, but the quality depends on the quality of the whole production process.
* 63-66 HRC: Currently knives of hardness up to 66 HRC (Twin Cermax of Zwilling J.A. Henckels) are available. These are no knives suitable for the majority of users, but rather a specific group of amateurs. Knives of such hardness have the disadvantage that they become brittle, resulting in breakage of blade parts when used carelessly and often a low resistance against corrosion. In other words: clean immediately after use.

## Other characteristics

Hardness is not the only characteristic of steel. Other mechanical characteristics are a.o. the draw strength, sturdiness (impact resistance), and cold brittleness.

Corrosion resistance is also an important chemical characteristic.

Hardness alone is not the be all and end all.

## Influence on the price of a knife

A knife in a good, hard steel type will cost a lot more than the same knife made from a lesser steel type.

The difference in price is only due to the cost price of the steel for a small part. The steel processing leads to the high difference in price.

Sharpening modern hard steel types like S90V are much more time consuming and more demanding on the used materials than the sharpening of 440C for example.

Hardening and tempering is a lot more critical with modern steel types and must sometimes be entrusted to specialised companies.

The steel type has an important impact on the price of a knife. If you want a really good knife you must be prepared to pay the price for it. But you will get an excellent piece of equipment in return.

## Pre-sharpening

Pre-sharpening means that you're pushing the edge of the knife back into shape on a coarse sharpening stone. You're removing minor damage from the edge and pushing it into the correct angle again. For the best results, pre-sharpening is an important step in the process. If you don't pre-sharpen well, the finer sharpening stones will be less effective and the whole process will take you more time. To repair a blunt knife, use a coarse sharpening stone (up to about grain size 600). Only move on to a sharpening stone with a finer grain size when the edge has been evenly sharpened along the entire length.

## Sharpening

After you're done pre-sharpening your knife, it's time to use a finer sharpening stone. Choose a sharpening stone with a higher grain size (between 600 and 3000). By sharpening with a higher grain size, you're removing the little scratches from the previous step. As a result, the edge will be smoother and sharper. Just make sure the step to a fine grain size is not too big. If you used a stone with grain size 180 for the first step, for example, then a 600 grit stone is perfect for the next step. And from 600 you can move on to 1000\. Generally, the knife is ready for use after grain size 1000\. However, you can also continue by polishing your knife. This will give you razor-sharp results!

## Polishing

Polishing your knife is really nothing more than sharpening with a very fine grain size. When you're polishing your knife, you're no longer removing any material from the edge of the knife. You're simply smoothing out the last tiny imperfections, so the edge will shine like a diamond. By polishing the edge, your knife will become sharp enough that you could use it to shave your hair! You can polish your knife with a very fine sharpening stone (grain size 3000 and up) or with a [strop](kato://category/stroppingproduct).

The most characteristic feature of Emerson’s pocket knives is the hook on the back of the blade called the wave shaped feature. A pocket knife with a wave opener can immediately be opened when you remove it from your pocket by pulling the knife back slightly. When you do the wave will be caught by the rim of your pocket after which the blade opens. According to most there is no faster way of opening a pocket knife. ## The modern classic

The ESEE 4 is arguably one of the most recognisable and popular survival knives out there. Designed as a utility and field knife with a 4.1 inch (10.4 cm) blade of simple and robust 1095 steel, the ESEE 4 has stood the test of time. This knife has been used and abused by bushcraft enthusiasts and tactical practitioners alike. I think one of the reasons people always return to their ESEE knife is the trust they have in the products. Time and time again, we have seen the ESEE team testing prototypes and new blades on their own field trips and training courses, only for these products to appear on the market a year later. There is no denying that they extensively test their own creations, and it shows.

## Not just a survival knife

Back when I wrote my review about these new 3D milled models from ESEE, I spoke about all the things I love in their knives. The simplicity of 1095 steel when it comes to maintenance and sharpening. The improved ergonomics and handling options of the new handle shapes (based on the original design which was more square-shaped), and the tightly snug and sleek moulded sheath. All of these things are true in the ESEE 4\. But this model feels even more comfortable to me than the 3 and the 6 models. The ESEE 4 sits in the Goldilocks zone in terms of weight and blade length, and I think this size appeals to not just survival enthusiasts, but also bushcrafters.

This blade is just about the perfect length for both intricate knife work and for heavy duty camp maintenance, such as firewood processing and shelter building. In Mors Kochanski’s Bushcraft about a man whose training combines bushcraft and survival skill, he talks about his knife and what he considers ideal.

> 'The general-purpose bush knife should have a blade as long as the width of the palm […] A blade 10 to 15 centimetres long will do intricate work like carving a netting needle, yet be large enough to present a good target for a baton when cutting down small trees […] The blade should be of good quality carbon steel, from two and a half to three millimetres thick and about two to two and a half centimetres wide […] The metal of the knife blade should extend for the full-length of the handle (a full tang) for strength. The handle should be a durable, water-resistant material that can be shaped to the user’s hand if necessary. The knife should have a strong pommel that will protect the handle if the knife is driven tip first deep into wood.’

The ESEE 4 is described by most as a survival knife first and foremost… But from the classic description above of the ‘ideal bush knife’, for all intents and purposes, this could be describing our ESEE.

## What are serrated knives?


Serrated knives are knives of which the edge is enhanced with small serrations.
