Knivesandtools Leather Sheath: how to choose the right size for your pocket knife

A good pocket knife deserves protection that lasts just as long. Our Knivesandtools Leather Sheath is handmade in Italy from high-quality Italian leather, with our logo embossed on the front. You get craftsmanship at a friendly price that only grows more beautiful over the years. The leather develops its own patina: the more you use the pouch, the more character it gets.

The sheaths come in three sizes: Small, Large and XL. Which one you need depends on your knife. We will help you choose below.

Leather is a living material, so expect a little give

Leather is not hard plastic. It stretches a little and shapes itself to your knife over time. A sheath that feels snug at first will loosen up on its own as you use it.

Torn between two sizes? Go for the larger one. A slightly roomier sheath never gets in your way: the leather folds neatly around your knife and your knife stays put. A sheath that is too tight stays awkward, because those last few millimetres always fight you. Better a fraction too roomy than too tight.

The sheaths also work nicely for knives you carry without a pocket clip, for example loose in your bag or jacket pocket.

Small: for compact knives

The Small is meant for smaller pocket knives. As a guideline: a closed length up to about 11 cm, a width up to about 2.5 cm and a thickness up to about 1 cm.

These knives fit well in a Small:

Large: for bigger folders

The Large offers room for sturdier work. As a guideline: a closed length up to about 13 cm, a width up to about 4 cm and a thickness up to about 2 cm. Is your knife longer, wider or above all thicker? Then the XL is your size.

XL: for thick and wide folders

The XL is there for knives that are too thick or too wide for the Large, and for the longest folders. As a guideline: a closed length up to about 14.5 cm, a width up to about 5 cm and a thickness up to about 2.5 cm.

That 5 cm of width is for flat knives. The thicker your knife or multi-tool, the less width is left: with a multi-tool of 2 cm thick you are down to about 4 cm. So look at the thickness first, then the width.

In short

Measure your knife closed for length, width and thickness, and compare that with the guidelines above. If your knife sits right on the border between two sizes, go for the bigger one. The leather stretches and shapes itself to your knife, so you enjoy it for years.
