But also for his special innovations that have shaped the world of knives as we know it today, such as the Field Strip Technology mechanism. With this mechanism, you can take a pocket knife apart in mere seconds to clean it. Without using tools. But his most important invention is the SpeedSafe-assisted opening. This is an opening mechanism featuring an integrated spring. When you think something has evolved as far as it can, Ken Onion always knows a way to give it a different spin.

This collaboration between [Work Sharp](kato://content/migrated_pageid_426) and Ken Onion didn't come out of nowhere. One of the most important machines in a knife maker's workshop is the belt sander. And in fact: the Knife & Tool Sharpener Ken Onion Edition is a mini version of this. When you put a sharpening belt with a fine grit on a belt sander, you can sharpen knives with it. Many knife makers, such as Ken Onion, use this because it works faster and more efficiently than a sharpening stone. Ken Onion thought everyone should get a chance to enjoy this! That's why Ken Onion and Work Sharp teamed up to produce this electric sharpener.

## Who is Bill Harsey?


Bill Harsey was born in 1955 in Oregon, United States. His family was initially comprised of lumberjacks but at some point Bill decided to work with knives. Ever since he definitely earned his stripes in the knife world. As a maker of unique knives Bill is incredibly popular. He, however, is mostly known for his cooperations with large knife brands such as Gerber, CRKT, Lone Wolf Knives, Ruger, Spartan Blades and, of course, Chris Reeve Knives. This is, after all, not the first time Bill has worked with CRK. At the 2003 Blade Show Harsey and Chris Reeve won the ‘Collaboration Knife of the Year’ award with the Chris Reeve Green Beret. A tactical, robust fixed knife, made for the U.S. Army Special Forces. In 2007 CRK and Bill Harsey won the ‘American Made Knife of the Year’ award at the Blade Show with the Chris Reeve Pacific Knife. Another fixed knife, made for the American army. This time to celebrate the 50th birthday of the first command troops. These troops are mostly active in the Pacific, hence the name.


## The Chris Reeve Impinda


After Chris’ departure Chris Reeve Knives needed a new hit. A knife that could emphasize the fact that even without Chris they could come up with innovative features and introduce top-quality knives. It is therefore understandable that Anne and Tim Reeve once again took a leap of faith with Bill Harsey. In the end their gamble paid off. At the 2018 Blade Show they were, once again, successful. This time with the Impinda which won the ‘American Made Knife of the Year’ award.

On the Sebenza 21 the pocket clip is located straight above the lockbar. Nice in one line. This ensures that the clip also pushes down on the lockbar. Some people, however, felt the preload on the lockbar became too high as a result. For that reason the Inkosi was already enhanced with a clip that was slightly twisted to make sure it would rest on the frame. The Sebenza 31 will get the same treatment.


### Improved ergonomics


The ergonomics of the Sebenza 21 were already perfect in all their simplicity. And yet there are still small things that could be improved which is why CRK made them happen. At the front of the handle, around the finger grooves, small subtle adjustments were made to make sure it feels even better in hand.


### Removing the hole and improved production processes


Characterizing about the [Sebenza 21](kato://content/migrated_pageid_906) is the hole on the presentation side. While producing the handle they used this hole to secure the scale in exactly the same way, every single time. For the Sebenza 31 the production process changed slightly to further tighten the tolerances. As such the hole in the presentation side was no longer necessary.


The tolerances of Chris Reeve Knives are, of course, already unparalleled. However, with the introduction of new machines and new production processes the knives can be produced even more accurately. That sounds promising! Good to know: only the handle and blade changed. The screws remained the same.

Richard Rogers lives on a ranch in New Mexico with his wife and son. He keeps livestock and has his workshop here. However, Richard is not a typical cowboy. Since 1996, he has been making handmade knives. First he started with hunting knives, and later with traditional slipjoints.

## Modern knives made from premium materials

Today he makes premium EDC gear, knives with liner locks and slipjoints with a double detent. Modern interpretations of the knives he started out with. By hand, but also mid-tech under his own name, in collaboration with renowned brands such as the Chinese Bestech. These knives are made from premium materials such as Damascus steel, Timascus and special types of wood and carbon fibres. His designs are clean and sophisticated.

> “I try to design knives with clean lines. I like knives that are slim and light, something that you can carry without noticing it until you need to cut something. I am constantly refining existing designs, and trying new things. I strive for excellence in my work. Every knife should work and cut well. My goal, with every knife I make, is to make it the best example of what that knife should be.”

## A big name in the industry

Years of experience in the knife world make Richard Rogers one of the leading designers in the industry. With no fewer than 50 awards, including two Best of Show awards from Blade Show Atlanta, it's no wonder that many popular pocket knives were designed by him.

Richard Rogers mainly works with the American [CRKT (Colombia River Knife & Tool)](kato://content/migrated_pageid_337). You know his name from the popular [CRKT CEO series](kato://category/crktceo) and knives like the [CRKT Montosa](kato://product/CK-7115) and the [CRKT Dually](kato://product/CK-7086). These production knives are often based on his handmade knives, as you can see in the pictures below.

## MKM and the Normar

MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. MKM is a consortium representing knife-makers from around the world with their headquarters in Maniago, Italy. [MKM](kato://content/migrated_pageid_943) has a range of knife companies working under their name, from LionSteel and Viper to Fox and Mercury, and each company has its own specialty. They have therefore created a large collection, with something for everyone. MKM has slipjoints and gentleman’s knives, as well as tactical fixed knives and EDC pocket knives. All made from the best materials and finished according to the Italian standard.

Jesper Voxnaes, whom I mentioned in the intro, was the mind behind the shape and style of this beauty. For those who may not be familiar with Jesper: he is a Danish knife maker with an impressive list of clients including the excellent GiantMouse Knives, as well as Böker, Spyderco, CRKT and Helle. Jesper is probably one of the most trusted in the industry right now, and his fingerprints are all over this knife. When discussing Vox with Knivesandtools, they pointed out some style features of Vox’ previous work that is also evident in the Normar: ‘... especially the handle, [which] is very recognizable as a Vox design. MKM Knives is one of the most exciting announcements of 2018. A new Italian brand, but still an old acquaintance. The name MIKITA also appears, something we also hadn’t heard of before. What is up with that? What is MKM Knives and why do we look forward to it?


## MKM and MIKITA


The abbreviation MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. Each knife enthusiast knows that Maniago is the knife capital of Italy. Perhaps even of the south of Europe. As Germany has Solingen and people in England know Sheffield, everyone knows that the best Italian knives come from Maniago. Literally at the same block at an industrial site in a suburb in this city in the north of Italy you will find all the large names from the Italian knife world. [Fox Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_378), [LionSteel](kato://content/migrated_pageid_443), [Viper](kato://content/migrated_pageid_486), Mercury and many others.


MIKITA is a cooperation of the last four companies. LionSteel, Viper, Fox and Mercury signed a network agreement in which they state to focus on raising the bar for knife makers in Maniago. They do so under the name of MIKITA: Maniago Innovation Knives Italy. By exchanging knowledge and ideas they are stronger together and increase the quality. 


The brands who joined forces to establish MIKITA now launched a new knife brand: MKM knives. The famous Italian quality Maniago knives are famous for, made by the four cooperating companies. Now you must understand why we are so excited!


## MKM Knives: cooperation with Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley


To immediately leave a mark with appealing models made by famous designers MKM decided to cooperate with the two biggest names in the international knife world: Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley. Both designers with an impressive track record, and many successful designs on their name.


Bob Terzuola can definitely be called one of the founders and pioneers in the field of the modern pocket knife. After all, he wrote incredibly popular books about quality knives, but more importantly: his designs have been loved for dozens of years. There are very few designers who last that long.


Lucas Burnley is a lot younger than Bob Terzuola, but in just a few years he has made a massive contribution to the knife world. As a designer he is incredibly productive and dozens of his designs are produced by famous brands such as CRKT and Böker, and now also by MKM Knives.
