## How does the gift card work?

Did you receive our gift card? You can use it by filling out the code during the final step of the ordering process (payment and shipping options).

* Every gift card is unique
* The gift card is a payment method, is used as money in the shopping cart and cannot be exchanged for cash
* The gift card can be used for multiple orders (if the order amount is smaller than the amount on the gift card)
* Multiple gift cards can be used for one order
* A lost, stolen or used gift card cannot be sent again

## Terms and conditions

These terms and conditions apply to all knivesandtools gift cards, which are sold by KATO Group BV. When you use a gift card you automatically agree to these terms and conditions:

Gift cards are not the same as coupon codes and other discount codes the KATO Group BV gives out. Gift cards have a unique combination of numbers, letters or both. These gift cards are exclusively created and sold by KATO Group BV via its websites.

The recipient gets the actual code once. A lost, stolen or used gift card cannot be sent again because it is unique. There will be no refund or new code provided. 

KATO Group BV has the right to fully accept the code once they have received it in physical form. When a code is used falsely, KATO Group can demand an actual payment for the goods. 

A gift card can be redeemed as a payment method in the shopping cart. This is at the end of the ordering process. One order can have multiple gift cards. 

The gift card can only be used in a KATO Group BV web shop.

Gift cards cannot be used for orders that have already been placed or outstanding amounts. The gift card cannot be redeemed for cash. 

When the amount on the gift card is higher than the order amount, the remaining sum will stay on the gift card. When the order amount is higher the extra amount can be paid after redeeming the gift card. 

When a product that is bought with a gift card is returned, the amount will be reinstated on the card. The gift card cannot be redeemed for cash. 

One cannot change, hack or forge the gift card. Attempts in doing this will result in the card being cancelled.

## Chris Reeve fixed knives: how it started 

Chris Reeve gained much renown in 1982 for the integral handle construction of his survival knives. These knives consist of a single piece of steel with a hollowed-out handle that can be unscrewed. Chris Reeve came up with this idea when working for the military. He needed a sturdier knife that could better withstand bad weather conditions. These integral survival knives were the first of their kind. Chris Reeve received several awards in the years that followed for his fixed-blade knives. Take the Chris Reeve Green Beret, for example. The Green Beret won the 'Collaboration Knife of the Year' at Blade Show 2003 It's a tactical robust fixed knife made for the U.S. Army Special Forces. In 2007, the Chris Reeve Pacific Knife won the 'American Made Knife of the Year'. This knife, too, was designed for the US military.

For his fixed knives, Chris Reeve really puts the focus on soldiers. This design choice is reflected in the materials used. The handles, for example, mainly feature handle scales made of micarta. Micarta is an incredibly strong and lightweight material that provides great grip. Especially in humid weather conditions, micarta really excels as this material does not lose its texture when wet. This is because the textile fibres expand a bit when wet, giving you more grip. The KG GunKote coating found on many of Chris Reeve's fixed-blade knives prevents rust and reflections, which comes in very handy in many military situations. The sheaths are also of phenomenal quality and make carrying a Chris Reeve fixed blade a real pleasure.

## Chris Reeve Mnandi knives: features 

The unparalleled quality of Chris Reeve knives is evident in the Mnandi. The Chris Reeve Mnandi is a beautifully designed gentleman's pocket knife made from premium materials. It is a knife for life, which will be passed on for many generations. In Zulu, 'Mnandi' means 'very nice'. It's a suitable name and the perfect description for such a gentleman's knife. The blade is made from CPM S45VN steel, an American steel that made its debut in the Mnandi in 2021. Compared to S35VN, S45VN is slightly better when it comes to sharpness retention, and it is also easier to sharpen. 

 

With a little practice, the Mnandi can be opened one-handed with the help of the cut-out in the blade. At first, though, it's probably best to open the knife with two hands. When opened, the blade is locked in place by a frame lock. Even though this small folding knife may look a little austere, the quality of the materials used, and the finish are absolutely exceptional.

The handles are made from the Japanese white oak and scorched. As a result the outside is sealed and the handle protected from the influences of the weather. The laminated steel axe head is comprised of 3 layers of steel (Warikomi). The middle of the edge is made from 0.45% carbon steel. The steel around it is a lot softer. As a result you have a very hard cutting edge and a softer edge to catch the blow. The head of the axe had been adorned with Japanese markings. The design refers to Kumadori of Kabuki, a very traditional type of Japanese dance. The letter underneath the mark is an ancient Japanese mark called ‘Mizuno’. On both sides of the axe head you will find stripes. They looks remarkable, but also have a specific meaning. The seven stripes represent the eight mountains, but the eighth is not mentioned as it can cause bad luck.

Cheese to complement your pasta dish? Chocolate flakes to finish off your homemade coconut cake? A salad with little pieces of carrot or apple? You could, of course, purchase these items in any grocery store. However, you could also grate them! Fresher, cheaper, artisanal and so much fun!


By grating your own cheese, lemon, orange peel, carrot, apple and many more different products, you will definitely feel like a chef. It will make the meal you have put your blood, sweat and tears in a tad more professional. In addition, you can grate the product as thin as you would like, while pre-grated products often only come in one ‘size’.


There are specific graters for specific products – for instance for hard cheeses or chocolate – but with a universal grater you will also go a long way. ### Price range:

Better and more exclusive materials make the knives more expensive. A Byrd knife is often priced between 30 and 60 euros. With occasional outliers. While Spyderco knives often start at 50 euros and can go up to 250 euros for the standard models.	 Sprint Runs can go up to 350 euros and the more exclusive Spyderco knives are often listed at 500/600 euros.

### Range:

Even in terms of range there is a difference. As we are writing this versus we offer 30 Byrd knives on our website and 260 Spyderco knives. And that's not counting the Spyderco kitchen knives we also sell. Quite a difference.

Spyderco achieves this number by producing many different versions of a popular model. Not only in terms of colour and handle material. Also in terms of types of steel and sometimes even locking mechanisms. Spyderco also produces knives for specific target groups. Take the [Salt-serie](kato://category/spydercosaltserie), for instance, for maritime use. So the chances of finding the right Spyderco knife are also much higher than with Byrd. Byrd Knives also doesn't produce Sprint Runs and Limited Editions.

### Price range
The price also differs. Both are premium brands. But we see that Benchmade produces a lot of knives listed between 100 and 200 euros. Zero Tolerance produces a couple knives that are listed between 150-200 euros, but most of the knives cost more than 200 euros. So the Zero Tolerance knives are a little more expensive. 

### Finish
Both brands produce amazing knives and you cannot go wrong with either. But when we take a closer look at the details we see that Zero Tolerance is a little better when it comes to the finish. You notice it when you look at the tuning, so how they move and when you look at the grind. 

## Benchmade vs Zero Tolerance: summary
Both produce excellent knives in the United States. Benchmade offers a broader range, with more favourably priced models. Zero Tolerance, however, produces knives with a slightly better finish. Which brand will you choose? Or will you simply get one from both!

Immediately after its release in 2016 the [Mora Garberg](kato://product/MO12642) had quite the impact. Budget brand Morakniv introduces a €100 knife? 'The nerve...', is what most bushcraft enthusiasts thought. At least: until the first enthusiasts got a hold of one. It was love at first sight!


To understand why the Garberg was such a remarkable step for the Swedish brand you need to know which tools actually put Mora on the map. It were budget knives such as the Mora Companion. A simple and decent knife, perfect for bushcraft and hunting purposes, which will cost you no more than 20 pounds. Many bushcraft enthusiasts started their first fire with this knife. And even people who spend hundreds of pounds on outdoor knives, often own one or multiple Mora Companions. This fact alone tells you more about how beloved those knives are.


## Morakniv Garberg

But Morakniv felt it could do better than the standard knives they had been producing for a while. It is exactly why the Garberg entered the stage. It took years before the final design was ready. Morakniv has done everything in their power to create the most durable Mora knife ever, perfect for those who only want to carry around one tool. Experts such as Dave Canterbury, known from the Discovery Channel, tested the Garberg in the field and gave feedback to make this knife even better. The product developers at Morakniv went to extremes and did everything in their power to make sure the Garberg was as good and strong as possible.

You need to be able to rely on an outdoor knife such as this. For that reason the construction of the Garberg is so great: no individual parts, no screws. Simply a steel blade with tang surrounded by a strong plastic handle. Different field tests have shown that the Garberg can handle quite a lot.

## Morakniv Garberg Dala Red

This year, we added a special version of the Garberg to our range. The distinctive red colour of the handle is an ode to the Morakniv Classic collection. The red handle was chosen to give the knives a slightly more luxurious look. Originally, Morakniv intended to make the handles from mahogany, but this would make it too expensive for a knife meant to be used. That's why they chose to stain the birch wood to give it its red colour.

Binoculars up to 300 euros give you just a bit more choice and often have a better image quality than binoculars up to 200 euros. Better light transmission, bright colour reproduction and sharper edge definition. A step up from a beginner's model, but obviously still good value for money.

The Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 is a icon in the knife world. As a knife manufacturer you handle such a showpiece with great care. And yet there was that announcement in June of 2019: the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31! We would love to tell you more about what changes and what it means for the Sebenza 21.


## Chris Reeve Sebenza 31: the innovations


As the name might already suggest the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 is an update of the Sebenza 21. This also means that it isn't a completely new model. Only an update with some important changes when compared to the 21.


### Ceramic lockbar interface


Okay this might sound difficult, but it really isn't. The Sebenza 21 is enhanced with a hardened titanium lockbar which immediately closes on the back of the blade to lock it. New for the 31 is that a ceramic ball was pressed into the end of the lockbar. This ball serves as a detent ball and 'lockbar insert' at the same time. Ceramic is harder than titanium and will therefore not wear out as quickly. It will also move better when it comes into contact with steel.

This system is not completely new. The Inkosi and Umnumzaam were already enhanced with this system. It is a lot more sustainable than that of the 21 and therefore an improvement. Characterizing for Chris Reeve Knives is that they always carefully think about these types of innovations. Decisions are not made overnight. Still one of the strengths of this rock-solid brand.

## 18650 battery, 21700 battery, CR123A battery or 16340 battery?

A light that runs on 18650 batteries can often also handle CR123A batteries. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

### 18650 batteries

[18650s](https://www.knivesandtools.ie/en/ct/18650-lithium-ion-accumulators-and-loaders.htm) contain Li-ion cells and are highly suitable for flashlights that are used regularly. They provide lots of power and are rechargeable, making them an attractive and economical choice for intensive use. They don't leak, and they have a high capacity. But you do have to bear the following in mind: 18650 batteries like to be used regularly. Are you planning to put an 18650 battery away for longer than 4 months? Then you'll have to use it and recharge it in the meantime. They stay at their best when used regularly.

### 21700 batteries

[21700 batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.ie/en/ct/21700-lithium-ion-batteries-and-chargers.htm) are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Like other batteries, they are named after their dimensions: 21700 batteries are 21 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. Because they are rechargeable, they're ideal if you use your flashlight regularly. It's good to remember that 21700 batteries can be protected or unprotected. This protection ensures that the battery doesn't get overloaded. Moreover, a protected battery doesn't overheat. So always choose a high quality battery. The biggest difference between 18650 and 21700 batteries is their size. 21700 batteries are slightly bigger than 18650 batteries. Because it is a little bigger, a 21700 battery also has more power and a longer run time.

### CR123A batteries

These are lithium batteries that cannot be recharged. Often, you can replace one 18650 battery with two [CR123A batteries](https://www.knivesandtools.ie/en/ct/cr123a-batteries.htm). The big advantage of a CR123A battery is that it holds its charge for 9 years without any significant self-discharge. They also perform better in very cold conditions than Li-ion batteries. Are you thinking of leaving a flashlight in your meter box in case the power goes out? Or in your car for a long time in case you break down? ### 16340 battery

From a technical point of view, a [16340 battery](https://www.knivesandtools.ie/en/ct/aa-batteries-penlite.htm?battery-type=16340) is equivalent to an 18650 battery, but in the size of a CR123A battery. For old flashlights that are too narrow for an 18650 battery but can take CR123A batteries, or for lights that normally run on one CR123A battery, 18340 batteries are definitely worth considering. Some flashlights that run on one CR123A battery deliver a higher capacity with a 16340 battery than with a regular CR123A battery. On the other hand, a 16340 battery usually has a relatively low capacity and therefore doesn't last for as long. The advantage they offer is that they're rechargeable. Again, they need to be used and recharged regularly in order to maintain their capacity as well as possible.

Well, the American version of the Chef’sChoice 22CC1520 which only has the 15 degree angle. The machine we sell gives you a choice of a 15 or a 20 degree angle, but is otherwise identical. According to the test panel this electric sharpening machine is worth every penny. ## But what about the Work Sharp E5?


Surprising? Not at all, we are convinced of the quality of the products we sell. However, the third place was given to the [Work Sharp Culinary E5](kato://product/WSCUE5). A place on the podium and therefore a great achievement, however, we believe that the Work Sharp is just as good as the Chef’sChoice 22CC1520. On some levels even better!


The inside of the system, for instance, where you place the knife to hold the angle, has been enhanced with a type of suede. This to make sure you don’t damage the blade above the edge. After all, while sharpening steel particles are released that can affect the blade. In addition, any left-over particles could still be located in the machine. The protective layer on the inside makes sure that these sharpening particles won’t do any harm. The Chef’sChoice does not have this layer. When using this machine we therefore recommend that you wrap a piece of tape around the blade.

The abbreviation EDC stands for: EveryDayCarry. An EDC knife is a knife you can carry with you every day. Obvious. But there is a little more to it than you might initially think.


Which EDC-knife will suit you best namely depends on how you spend your day. A plasterer who opens bags of stucco every single day will ask something different from his knife than an office clerk who only uses his knife to open letters and peel apples. And yet they can carry a knife with them on a daily basis that to them has their own EDC function.

What is EDC?

## 1: A knife for opening packaging


A knife is ideal for opening packaging. Often much more so than scissors. Whether it's removing the thin film around a packet of tea, opening a letter, or getting into blister packs or a package from your favourite online shop (hint, hint): a pocket knife always comes in handy.


This all sounds very obvious, but there is another interesting perspective here. We have read a plea from an American dentist who [advises all his patients to carry a pocket knife.](https://knifenews.com/using-teeth-for-cutting-tasks/) We humans are highly inclined to use our teeth to tear apart packaging and the like. You'll recognise this tendency too. This dentist argues that dental treatment to repair your incisors after being just a little too enthusiastic is many times more expensive than a decent pocket knife.

## My first impressions:

## The differences between the Morakniv Garberg and Kansbol


### The blade


We start with the most obvious difference: the blade. The shape, the grind, the type of steel and the thickness are all different. We will discuss all of them


### Difference in steel


For many people the most prominent difference is the difference in steel. The difference, however, isn't that obvious, especially when you know that Morakniv doesn't specify specific types of steel. We do know the type of steel used for the Garberg because it was mentioned as it was introduced.


The Morakniv Kansbol is available in one type of steel: Morakniv stated that it is 'Stainless steel'. But we have all reasons to assume it is Sandvik 12C27. A great type of steel that retains its sharpness well. 12C27 is even relatively easy to sharpen with limited means. A type of steel that is nicely balanced in terms of all features a type of steel needs.


The Morakniv Garberg is available in two types of steel: also a 'Stainless Steel' version and a 'Carbon Steel' version. This Stainless Steel, however, is slightly different from the steel used for the Kansbol. For the Garberg Morakniv namely uses Sandvik 14C28N. It appears to be a difference of merely a couple letters, but in reality this means that it is quite the improvement. At a microscopic level 14C28N has an even finer structure to make sure it will retain its sharpness even better. Also, because nitrogen was added (hence the N in 14C28N) this steel is even more corrosion resistant. Also keep in mind that Morakniv has a lot of experience when it comes to making sure such a hard type of steel stays tough with the help of an excellent heat treatment.

At Knivesandtools we sell many knives, in many shapes and sizes. There are however a number of knives we do not ship to the UK or Ireland. While we might have in the past. Folding knives that open with a flipper, or by assisted opening for instance. We’d like to explain the reasons behind this.


## We stick to the law


First and foremost: at Knivesandtools we do everything we can to adhere to the law as strict as possible. We’ve been doing this since 1999 and we moved with the law since the start. As many know, we’re based in the Netherlands and Germany, so all knives we sell must be legal to possess in these countries. Otherwise we would not be able to stock them. Next we see whether the knives are legal in the other countries we sell to.


In the basis you as a consumer are responsible for the legality of items you import into the UK or Ireland, but we want to prevent any problems, so we do not sell certain knives if we know they are illegal. This is why we do not sell machetes in Ireland for instance. As they are specifically outlawed.


## The ‘flick knife’ conundrum


On Gov.uk you can currently (20-11-2020) find the following definition of the banned ‘flick knife’:


*flick knives (also known as ‘switchblades’ or ‘automatic knives’) - a blade hidden inside a handle which shoots out when a button is pressed*


This is however a more simplified version of the actual law. Because the current Offensive Weapons Act states the following:


*“(a)any knife which has a blade which opens automatically—*


*(i)from the closed position to the fully opened position, or*


*(ii)from a partially opened position to the fully opened position, by manual pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the knife, and which is sometimes known as a “flick knife” or “flick gun”; or”.*


Apparently this last bit, with a ‘button, spring or other device in or attached to the knife’ also spans the use of a **flipper** to ‘flick open’ a knife. It also gives reason to assume that any assisted opening knife is not legal to own. Though that is easier to grasp than a manually opening flipper knife.


## Grey area


To some this may be crystal clear, others might find this a grey area. It does not differentiate between a thumb stud and a flipper. We’ve come to notice that the Home Office likes to air on the side of caution, as we’ve had quite a few parcels being intercepted an destroyed. That’s where the caution stops, as they then do send quite an alarming letter to the intended recipient, warning about consequences for ‘repeat offenders’. Including fines that run into the thousands of pounds, and even years in prison. Quite harsh for a simple folding knife.


## Stopping the flippers


This is why we’ve stopped selling flipper knives, assisted openers and some other knives to the UK and Ireland. We want to adhere to the law, even if it is not crystal clear. The risk for you as our customer, us as a business and all the lost merchandise are simply not worth it. We’ve worked with a ‘soft’ ban just preventing the shipping of these items, while still listing them for customers from outside the UK who were used to order from our UK website. But now we’ve decided to take them offline for good. A step other UK retailers took before us, and we expect others to follow suit in the near future as this affects everyone. 


## Zombie knives


The 2019 Offensive Weapons Act also includes a ban on ‘Zombie knives’. Though the definition on what makes a knife a zombie knife is not very clear. What it does say is the knife may not have: *“images or words (whether on the blade or handle) that suggest that it is to be used for the purpose of violence.”*. Which is why we took several other knives off our website that one could possibly classify as a ‘Zombie knife’. This includes some large fixed-blade knives, for example. Though we are very curious how this will pan out in the future when the law is put to practice.


## Why is Ireland affected?


Knife laws in Ireland are quite similar to those in the UK. Though they are not as strict in this area. This does however affect our Irish customers, as all parcels we ship to the Republic of Ireland are shipped to the UK, and forwarded from there. That means we cannot risk these parcels passing the UK Home Office, even though their final destination does not lay in the UK.


We hope you understand that we are not happy having to take these measures. But we had to. To protect you as our customer, and our business. Why we do not sell certain knives in the UK and Ireland

The torch is really two torches in one. When you take it out of the box, it's a compact flashlight with an angled 'face'. You can easily attach the Fenix HM61R V2.0 to the included head band and turn it into a head torch.

I think the HM61R V2.0 a successful mix between a head torch and a work light. The lines of the design are not too busy and the copper-coloured lines around the button and lamp head look great. The whole feels very solidly constructed, and it has a nice finish. The LED is perpendicular to the body, leaving room for a large button. The Luminus SST-40 LED, together with two red 2835 LEDs, are almost hidden behind a diffuse, plastic lens. Personally, I prefer a glass lens because the highest mode will generate quite a lot of heat. Slits on the side of the housing should make sure the heat is dissipated. The magnetic charging port is also embedded into the lamp head. On the body, next to the type designation, we also find a sturdy clip that is removable if desired. It's better to leave the clip in place because you need it to attach the HM61R V2.0 to the head band. The head band matches the lamp in colour and has reflective lettering to improve visibility. On the back there's a strong magnet, which comes in handy when you want to stick it to a metal surface. The housing includes the 18650 battery with a capacity of 3400 mAh. 

The HM61R V2.0 is not a lightweight, but it is very solidly built and still nicely compact. In terms of quality and finish, I couldn't find any shortcomings.

### Wood pulp and resin


[Sage](kato://content/migrated_pageid_54) cutting boards are made from FSC-certified wood pulp and resin. The board is soft enough to not damage the knives and also extra hygienic because it isn't porous. As such the Sage cutting board adheres to the HACCP-norm. Compared to most 'regular' wooden cutting boards these boards are dishwasher proof. In addition to the fact that this board is amazing to use, it is also heat-resistant (up to 350 degrees) which means that you can also use it as a coaster.


### Thermoplastic Polyurethane


The letters TPU stand for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. In short this material has some important advantages compared to 'normal' plastic cutting boards: it is scratch-resistant, flexible, won't absorb any smells or flavours and it doesn't give bacteria a chance. This materials works with you as you use it. As such you don't scratch the material which means your knives retain their sharpness. Another advantage is that these cutting boards are dishwasher proof. On the other hand, the solid, unique look and feel of the wood is lacking.

How do I choose the right cutting board? 

In comparison to its predecessor the CL26R appears to have shrunk, also visually. This is mostly due to the fact that the CL26R is more rounded; the light does not have any protruding edges, but does have a smaller diameter. As such the CL26R fits even better in your coat pocket. Despite the fact that the light feels 'smoother' than the CL25R it won't roll away as easily when it is placed on its side. This is due to the position of the charging port and the switch which are both located on the sides. The light is mostly made from polycarbonate, with only one metal part, like the hook to hang it and the screw thread for the tripod mount. The material is incredibly decent and not that sensitive to scratches. The CL26R even survived after the crew of Knivesandtools drove over it with a car! So the construction quality is just fine. Despite the fact that the design looks very austere I think it looks great and more contemporary than the older model. The seams nicely fit, there are no sharp edges and the lettering is nice and straight. On top of the light you can find the mount for a tripod or, for instance, a gorilla-pod; thanks to this screw thread the attachment options of the CL26R are almost endless. Here you will also find the hook you can use to hang the light, even though I do find it a little small. If you want to hang the light from an overhanging branch it is best if you use a lanyard or a large split ring in combination with the hook. On the side you can find the micro-USB port to charge the light that is covered with rubber to make sure it is protected from dirt and water. Even though USB-c is also gaining in popularity this port will do just fine.


The other side contains a rubber switch. Initially I thought that the switch had a built-in power-indicator. This, however, is an optical deception. One of the remarkable features of the CL26R can be found at the bottom of the light: that is where you can find the second light. You can't see much of the light sources used, because here the LED lights are also covered by diffused plastic. With a little help from the hook you can easily open the CL26R. The thing you immediately notice in the battery compartment (unlike the CL25R) is that an icon tells you how to place the battery. Two gold-plated springs ensure that the light stays intact during a fall and the battery compartment is also reinforced with aluminium. Fenix did this to better isolate the battery when you are planning to use the light in extreme cold circumstances. Because the screw cap has been enhanced with a magnet the battery will 'stick' when you open the light. With average use the light doesn't have to be opened that often because you can immediately charge the battery. The light closes with a clear 'click' and immediately everything will be nicely in place again. My conclusion of this chapter: The CL26R is nicely constructed, I cannot find any flaws in terms of construction and finish. Below a couple more photographs to clarify!
