Bark River Aurora knives: all-round bushcraft knives

The Bark River Aurora was designed as an all-round bushcraft knife. Founder of Bark River, Mike Stewart, designed this model himself. One of the things he paid attention to was that regardless of how you hold the knife, you always need to have enough grip. For example, with reverse grips for more advanced bushcraft cutting techniques. It is not that surprising that the Bark River Aurora is an incredibly popular choice amongst bushcraft enthusiasts.

Features of the Bark River Aurora

Bark River Aurora blade

The Bark River Aurora is available in different steel types: CPM 3V steel, CPM 154-staal, A2 or CruWear. CPM 3V is a type of tool steel known for its exceptional strength. As such it won't break and will retain its sharpness well. CPM 154 steel is a premium type of stainless steel that retains its sharpness well. A2 is an incredibly strong and tough type of steel, but it is not stainless. Dry the knife after use and apply a coat of oil when necessary. Like CPM 3V, A2 is a tool steel that would sooner bend than break. CPM CruWear is a tool steel that is known for its exceptional sharpness retention. Sharpen it once, and it'll stay that way for an impressively long time. You do, however, need to be careful with moisture and acids: CPM CruWear is not completely stainless. There's one thing that these different blades have in common; they are all solidly constructed with a thick enough blade to be able to perform heavy-duty tasks. The edge of the Aurora always has a convex grind.

Bark River Aurora handle

In terms of the handle, there are many options to choose from. For example, there are different kinds of micarta handles available. Micarta is a strong and lightweight material, made from linen and synthetic resin. It feels comfortable in hand, even in wet or cold circumstances. You could also choose a wooden handle, like Desert Ironwood or American Walnut. Desert Ironwood is a type of hardwood mainly found in the United States and Mexico. It has a distinctive colour and a beautiful grain. This great type of wood makes the knife look extra luxurious. American Walnut is a gorgeous type of wood that feels great in hand. It kind of looks like the interior of a classic car. The Aurora is also available with a SureTouch G10 handle. This is a combination of layers of G10 with layers of rubber. As a result, the knife can handle its own and offers you enough grip.

So many people, so many knives

The great thing about how Bark River produces knives is the large number of variations that are possible. The result? Knives with over 10 different types of steel, and 10 different types of handle materials. Add the fact that there are also variations in jimping, and special light-weight versions and you there is enough to choose from!
