What do you need in a survival kit?

A survival kit centres on the two things you need first outdoors: drinking water and fire. Together, they make up by far the largest part of the range.

  • Water filters for trips. A filter straw or squeeze bottle removes bacteria and protozoa from stream or lake water as you drink. Light, small and ready to use, with no waiting time.
  • Pump filters for longer trips. If you’re outdoors for days or travelling with others, then a pump filter is more practical: more litres per minute and a replaceable element that lasts for thousands of litres.
  • Tablets as a backup. Chemical purification weighs next to nothing and also tackles viruses, which most filters do not remove. The waiting time is the drawback, so use tablets alongside a filter, not instead of one.
  • Fire, too. A firesteel is the smallest survival tool you can take: it works when wet and cold, and weighs less than a box of matches.

LifeStraw and Katadyn together make up most of the range, from the familiar filter straw to pump filters that last through an expedition. Check the replaceable element in each filter: it determines how many litres you can filter.
