Features of EDC wallets

An EDC wallet is deliberately small. Space for your cards and some cash, and nothing more, so there is still room left in your pocket for a knife or a torch.

Most card holders have an aluminium body. There are also wallets in technical textile such as X-Pac and Axoflux, and a few in leather.

How do you choose the best wallet?

Cards only, or banknotes as well? A card holder is the slimmest and holds four to six cards. A billfold or tri-fold has a compartment for paper money as well and is thicker. That is the choice that determines the rest.

  • Aluminium is rigid and keeps your cards straight. X-Pac and Axoflux are light and keep their shape. Leather gives with use and looks better over the years, but there are only a few of those.
  • An RFID-blocking wallet shields contactless cards. If you do not want that, you can pay without taking the card out.
  • The card holders with a slider push your cards out in steps, so you can grab the right one without looking.
  • Some models are more like a small organiser, with space for a cable or a key.

Victorinox supplies the card holders with slider mechanism and Alpaka the pouches in technical textile. The James Brand, Tasmanian Tiger, WESN and ESEE have the wallets in leather and nylon.

If you are looking for something to hang on your keys instead of carrying it in your pocket, have a look at EDC gear.
