USB-C torches: charging without a separate charger

Why choose a torch with USB-C?

Simple: because you already have that cable. USB-C is now the standard on your phone, your laptop and your earbuds, so you only need to take one cable with you when you are on the go. The plug also always fits, whichever way you hold it. Have you drained the lamp in the field? Then you can quickly connect it to your power bank.

There is a trade-off, though, and we want to be honest about it. A charging port is a hole in the housing. Most lamps have a rubber flap covering it, and that flap determines whether your lamp stays waterproof. So always press it shut properly.

What should you look for when choosing?

• The charging current: the higher it is, the faster your lamp is full again
• Whether the lamp stays on while it is connected to the cable
• Whether the flap over the port closes firmly (this determines the waterproofness)
• Whether you can replace the battery separately, or whether it is built in permanently
